The Hype Behind Cellulite

by Brenda Williams

Cellulite is the bane of existence for most women- just ask them, and I am positive that most women will have a story to tell. Unfortunately, cellulite is a skin condition that tends to mostly affect women (why are men so lucky?). When cellulite occurs, it usually makes its appearance where the skin of the lower limbs, stomach area and/or pelvic area are. It is characterized by those unsightly dimples or ripples in the skin that you often see on people who have a little bit of fat. However, cellulite can and does occur on people who are very thin- even athletes aren't immune!

There is much debate as to the existence of cellulite and why most women get it and most men don't. Some researchers gather that cellulite is caused by hormones. For example, it is widely believed that Estrogen is the culprit behind the existence of cellulite in so many women versus a nominal amount of men. There has been no clinical evidence to back up the existence of cellulite, however. Some other factors have been shown to aggravate cellulite such as gender, race, biotype, subcutaneous fat as well as a predisposition to circulatory insufficiency. Additionally, surely a lack of exercise coupled with the consumption of foods that are high in fat all contribute to the problem.

There are also some who swear that sitting or staying in certain positions for long periods of time (I.e. having a desk job) can contribute to increased cases of cellulite in people. There are also some people who swear up and down that fashion plays a significant role, citing that women who wear tighter fitting underwear that restricts blood flow to the area are more likely to encourage the occurrence of cellulite to form than other women who choose not to wear underwear at all or who choose to wear looser fitting underwear. So, what can be done about this tragedy? Well, as it turns out, options for treatment are extremely limited. There is no scientific literature which documents that any of the tried therapies for reducing or eliminating cellulite actually work.

Some of the various therapies that have been tried on the stubborn cellulite problem include (but are certainly not limited to): intophoresis, ultrasound, thermotherapy, pressotherapy, pneumatic massaging, lymphatic drainage, electrolipophoresis, etc. There are also a plethora of cosmetic techniques- all of which claim to have “remedies” to the cellulite problem, but so far none of the so-called remedies have yielded any sustainable results. Some of these tried and true “remedies” include: mesotherapy, liposuction, etc. In some cases, liposuction actually exacerbates the problem with cellulite, making it that much more apparent!

So far, the only thing that seems to hold promise is having a balanced diet and exercising. Doing so may help to reduce the fat content within the distorted cells just below the skin's surface (the cells which cause the dimpled appearance). However, even this seems to be a shot in the dark as it doesn't completely get rid of the problem. At the end of the day, it just seems like the ladies are out of luck!
